About half the women reported using vitamins prior to conception. There were 524 miscarriages or spontaneous abortions among the subjects. The studies found that the threat for miscarriage was 57 % lower among women who consumed vitamins, unlike those who did not.

Hasan and colleagues noted that this lower risk was not modified by other factors including age, hormone use, the number of prior pregnancies, smoking habits, race/society, educational level, and matrimonial status,  As spontaneous abortion happens very early in pregnancy, it is essential for women of reproductive age, who may become pregnant, to consume a balanced diet and use vitamins.

However, the study was powerless to account for nutritional factors or healthy lifestyle behaviors, and did not distinguish between prenatal vitamin and multivitamin use. Higher serum levels of vitamin D3 were linked with a reduced threat of non-melanoma skin cancer, researchers reported here.

Serum vitamin D3 levels of 30 ng/ml or more were associated with a 45% lower rate of basal cell carcinoma, compared to the rate at the lowest vitamin D3 level, Jean Tang, M.D., from Stanford University Medical Center, in Stanford, Calif., stated at the Society for Investigative Dermatology meeting.

Jean explains that there was also a trend towards compact occurrence of skin cancers in this group over the five year study period.

Dr. Tang and her coworkers analyzed data from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS), which included fit, ambulatory men 65 and older, from 6 medical sites across the United States.

A subgroup of 1,108 study participants provided self-reported information about basal cell carcinoma at baseline, and then five years afterward.
